Hey everybody! I’m back with the Dog of the Month for June, which is the Vizsla!

Originally from Hungary, the Vizsla (pronounced veesh-luh), also called the Hungarian Vizsla, was bred to be a pointing and retrieving dog in the 1800’s. I like to think of these dogs as red versions of Weimaraners because Vizslas have so much in common with Weimaraners. One of those things is their personality: they are energetic, sometimes stong-willed, and often enjoy playing with children, even though the energy levels of these dogs may be a bit too much for young kids! Vizslas can also be sensitive to loud noises, so when they are young they should be introduced to loud environments with a lot going on. Because they have so much energy, these dogs are best suited for active households.

Vizslas are also similar to Weimaraners in appearance; they both have the same lean, athletic body shapes and floppy ears. However, instead of having a gray coat, the Vizsla’s coat is a warm, reddish-copper color, like a penny. There are two types of Vizslas: short-haired and wirehaired. The short-haired Vizsla’s coat is short and smooth, while the wirehaired Vizsla’s coat is longer and made of coarse, wiry fur. A weekly brushing will suffice for the short-haired variety, while the wirehaired needs to be brushed daily.

As always, if you’re interested in bringing a Vizsla into your life, please consider adopting or buy one from a reputable breeder!

Okay, that’s all I have to tell you about this dog breed. Hope you enjoyed reading!
