Hi guys! Welcome back!

Since today, October 1st, is National Black Dog Day, I decided to do something different for the Dog of the Month. I’m briefly highlighting not just one, but five dog breeds this time, all of which are black!

National Black Dog Day was established to raise awareness about the plight of black dogs, which is often referred to as “Black Dog Syndrome.” What this means is, black dogs are some of the most overlooked animals in shelters. One reason why is that their color sort of masks their facial features (especially in pictures), making them either not as noticeable or more intimidating than lighter-colored dogs. Also, some people are afraid to adopt a black dog because of the (very untrue) superstition that black dogs are bad luck, or the belief that they are more aggressive than other dogs (which is also not true). The truth is, most black dogs are just as wonderful, not to mention beautiful, as other dogs and are just as deserving of good homes! So without any further ado, here is a list of some dog breeds that come in black!

Scottish Terrier

They may be small, but Scotties have huge personalities! Their tenacious nature has earned them the nickname “Diehard.” They are known to stand up to dogs twice their size, and they can even be good watchdogs because of their wariness of strangers!

Black Labrador

There’s a reason why the Lab is the #1 most popular dog breed in the United States! These dogs are highly trainable, easygoing, and make good dogs for families. They often work as service or police dogs because of their intelligence and eagerness to please.

Schipperke

You may remember this as the Dog of the Month for August! Schipperkes are very energetic, busybody dogs that have a tendency to get into mischief, earning their breed the nickname LBD, or “Little Black Devil.”

Black German Shepherd

Yes, these handsome dogs also come in black! German shepherds are smart, hardworking dogs that can get bored without a job to do. They are known for working alongside the police and military or for being service dogs. They tend to be very loyal to their people!

Belgian Sheepdog

These dogs look a bit similar to German shepherds, and they’ve got similar personalities, too! They are highly active, intelligent, and fiercely loyal.

As you can see, black dogs come in all different shapes, sizes, breeds/mixes, and personalities, so there’s one out there for every dog lover! If you are in the process of looking for a dog, please don’t forget to consider the black dogs!

See you soon!
