Hi everyone! Hope you all have had a good Easter! Sorry that there was no Dog of the Month for April. I’ve been busy. The Dog of the Month for May is the Australian shepherd (Aussie for short). Even though you would think that they originated from Australia since it’s in their name, these dogs actually may have come from Spain.

Since Aussies were used to herd and watch over sheep, they are very intelligent and are one of those dogs that need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to stay busy. Australian shepherds make great dogs for people who want to participate in agility competitions or want a Frisbee-catching dog. Also, if you’re looking for a hiking buddy, the Aussie may be the perfect one for you! He’ll make a wonderful family dog if he is introduced to kids as a young puppy. But warning: he may try to herd them! 🙂

The Australian shepherd’s thick double coat can come in black, red, red merle, or blue merle, and may or may not have white or reddish-tan markings.

Okay, I guess that’s it. See you soon!
