Welcome back everybody!

I thought the Boston terrier would be the perfect Dog of the Month for July because it’s an all-American breed—originally bred and developed in Boston, Massachusetts! In fact, the Boston terrier’s nickname is the “American Gentleman” due to his typical bi-colored coat that looks like a tuxedo, as well as his charming personality! Because of this, it’s pretty hard to believe that they were originally bred for fighting. Boston terriers tend to get along with everyone they meet, even other animals and children, and make wonderful companions. They love to please and are often very food-motivated, making them a highly trainable breed! However, they are more susceptible to obesity than many other types of dogs, so be careful with how many treats and snacks you give them, and make sure they get a moderate amount of exercise daily.

The Boston terrier’s coat is short and smooth and is made up of two colors. They are typically black and white but can also be white with brown, red, blue, or brindle. A weekly brushing is all you need to keep your Boston’s coat in good shape.  The wrinkles on the Boston terrier’s face should be cleaned often. Also, as with all brachycephalic (flat-faced) dog breeds, Boston terriers can overheat very quickly. Be sure not to exercise them in extreme weather, and never leave them alone in a car on hot or even mildly warm days.

If you’re interested in getting a Boston terrier, be sure to buy from a reputable breeder or adopt one from a local animal shelter or rescue!

Well, that’s all for now. See you soon, and happy Fourth of July!
