Greyhound running

Hi Dogroll readers! For those of you who are back in school, I hope you all are enjoying it so far!

The Dog of the Month for September is another favorite dog breed of mine, the greyhound! This dog used to help hunt rabbits and larger animals. I bet he actually caught them too, because these long, sleek-bodied dogs are very fast. Not only are they the fastest dog breed, but I once read that they are also the fastest land animal after the cheetah! If I owned a greyhound, I’d name him Dash! 🙂

This is one of the oldest dog breeds–there are even carvings of them on some ancient tombs in Egypt! Today many people like to enter their greyhounds in races. Greyhound racing is a sport where the greyhounds run around a track chasing a mechanical rabbit. I guess it’s kind of like a car race, only with dogs instead! There are also rescue groups where people can adopt retired racing greyhounds.

These dogs make great pets because they are very quiet in the house and are gentle with kids. They are not good friends for small dogs and cats, though, since greyhounds like to chase small animals! Speaking of that, here’s a warning: When taking a greyhound for a walk, always keep him on a leash, because if he sees a squirrel or any other small creature, chances are he’ll take off! And just because they are called greyhounds doesn’t mean they are always gray! Greyhounds can be any color.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading about this Dog of the Month. I have to go now, but I‘ll be back with the next Dog of the Month!
